It was invented in 1994 by Denso Wave, a Toyota subsidiary, to track automotive parts, and spread to everyday use once smartphone cameras could read it natively. As a rule of thumb, the scanning distance is about ten times the width of the code, so a code that needs to be scanned from 5 meters away should be roughly 50 cm wide on the projected screen.
