Introduction

Google Slides and PowerPoint are the two most-used presentation tools, and the choice is no longer only about price and features. Both now have a built-in AI assistant that can draft slides, and both changed their plans and pricing over the past year.

This guide compares them on collaboration, design, offline use, AI, pricing and file compatibility, then tells you which one fits your situation. Prices and features are current as of October 2026.

What Is Google Slides?

Google Slides is Google’s browser-based presentation app and part of Google Workspace. It is free with a Google account, saves automatically to Google Drive and lets several people edit the same deck at the same time. It also includes Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, in a side panel (see the AI section below). New to it? Read our beginner guide to Google Slides.

What Is Microsoft PowerPoint?

Microsoft PowerPoint is the presentation app in Microsoft 365. It runs as a desktop app on Windows and Mac, as a web app and on mobile, and works fully offline once installed. It is known for Morph transitions, Designer layout suggestions, Presenter View and Copilot.

What Are The Advantages Of Google Slides?

  • Easy to learn: A clean interface that works in any browser, so new users can start building right away.
  • Real-time collaboration: Several people can edit one deck at once, leave comments and suggest edits, with no file versions emailed back and forth.
  • Access from any device: Decks live in Google Drive, so you can open them on a laptop, tablet or phone.
  • Free for personal use: For teams it comes with Google Workspace plans (see pricing below).
  • Auto-save and version history: Every change is saved as you work, and you can restore earlier versions.
  • Fonts and themes: Built-in themes plus the Google Fonts library. You can add fonts to Google Slides, import themes and use SlideUpLift’s Google Slides templates.
  • Video and Google integration: You can embed YouTube and Drive videos, and pull charts from Google Sheets. Here is how to add a video to Google Slides.
  • Accessibility tools: Screen reader support, voice typing and live captions while presenting.
  • Gemini built in: Draft slides, generate images and build a full deck from a prompt (details in the AI section).

What Are The Disadvantages Of Google Slides?

  • Offline use needs setup: You must turn on offline access in Google Drive first. Real-time collaboration, embedded video and live Sheets data do not work offline.
  • Formatting can shift on import: Fonts may be swapped, layouts can move and complex animations may not carry over from PowerPoint files. Review the deck after importing.
  • Sharing settings matter: A deck set to public, or shared too widely, can expose confidential content. Review permissions regularly.
  • Fewer advanced design tools: Animations and transitions are more basic than PowerPoint’s. See how to add animations and transitions in Google Slides.
  • Depends on your connection: A slow connection means slow editing and delayed updates from collaborators.

What Are The Advantages Of Microsoft PowerPoint?

  • Advanced design and animation: Morph, Zoom and Designer make polished layouts and cinematic transitions faster to build. See how to add animation in PowerPoint.
  • Large library of themes and templates: Plus full control over fonts, colors, masters and animation paths. Make your own with how to make a branded PowerPoint template.
  • Works fully offline: Once installed, you can build and present without internet.
  • Rich media: Photos, video, audio, charts and 3D models. You can even screen record using PowerPoint.
  • Microsoft 365 integration: Live Excel charts, Word content and OneDrive saving. You can also share a PowerPoint on Microsoft Teams.
  • Presenter tools: Presenter View shows notes, a timer and the next slide while the audience sees only the slides. In PowerPoint Live, Microsoft says attendees can select slide text and ask Copilot to explain it.
  • Brand Kit and Skills with Copilot: Apply your company’s logos, icons, themes and fonts, and save multi-step workflows as reusable Skills (details in the AI section).
  • Works across devices: Windows, Mac, web, iPhone and Android.

What Are The Disadvantages Of Microsoft PowerPoint?

  • Cost. Needs a Microsoft 365 subscription or a one-time purchase that does not include ongoing updates and cloud features.
  • Steeper learning curve. Advanced animation and design tools take time to learn. Our PowerPoint keyboard shortcuts guide helps.
  • Easy to overdesign. Flashy transitions and crowded layouts can bury your message.
  • Large files. Decks with heavy video or effects can be slow on older machines.
  • Co-editing is less smooth. Co-authoring works through OneDrive or SharePoint but is generally rated below Google Slides for live teamwork. See how to track changes in PowerPoint.
  • Install and update. Not as quick as opening a browser tab on a new device.
  • Copilot depends on your plan. Copilot access varies by Microsoft 365 plan, and business plans add Copilot through a separate license.

AI in 2026: Gemini in Google Slides vs Copilot in PowerPoint

Both apps can now draft a full presentation from a prompt. Google added full multi-slide generation with Gemini in mid-2026, and Microsoft has kept adding Copilot features to PowerPoint almost every month. Features and plan requirements change often, so the date at the top of this page matters.

Gemini in Google Slides

  • Full deck from one prompt. In the Slides side panel, Gemini can create a multi-slide presentation. Google began rolling this out in June 2026, with an extended rollout starting June 29.
  • Grounded in your files. You can add reference files from Google Drive, and Gemini can suggest relevant files, emails and chats.
  • On-brand by example. Attach an existing deck as a style reference so the new slides match its look.
  • Outline first. You can edit or approve the outline before the slides are created.
  • Editable output. The slides are native and fully editable, not images.
  • Single-slide tools. “Create” and “Enhance this slide” generate or restyle individual slides (April 2026), and the side panel can generate images.
  • Who gets it. Google AI Pro and Ultra consumer plans, plus Google Workspace plans, with the level of Gemini access depending on the plan.

Copilot in PowerPoint

  • Decks from prompts, notebooks and web pages. Copilot can build slides from a prompt, from Copilot Notebooks content, and from public webpages used as source material.
  • Restyle from a reference deck. Create a new deck, or restyle one, using another presentation’s visual style.
  • Brand Kit. Use your company’s logos, icons, themes and fonts from your Microsoft 365 Brand Kit.
  • Skills. Built-in Skills (May 2026), custom Skills you can create and edit (July and August 2026), and prebuilt Skills and connectors (September 2026) package multi-step workflows so you do not retype long prompts.
  • Comments. Copilot can write, reply to and resolve comments, and assign tasks to stakeholders from comments.
  • Longer jobs. Microsoft’s September 2026 update describes Copilot continuing long tasks after you leave PowerPoint or go offline, and notifying you when they finish.
  • Mobile editing. Copilot editing reached iPhone earlier in 2026 and Android in September.
  • Who gets it. Microsoft 365 Personal and Family include a limited monthly allowance of AI credits. Microsoft 365 Premium gives individuals greater Copilot access. Business plans add Copilot through a separate license.

Both can draft a full deck from a prompt. Gemini’s strength is working from your Drive files inside Google Workspace. Copilot adds Skills, Brand Kit and long-running tasks inside PowerPoint. Whichever you use, review the output yourself: Google notes that AI features can suggest inaccurate information.

Beyond the app: AI agents and deck generators

  • ChatGPT dots. In late September 2026 OpenAI introduced “dots”, always-on personal agents inside ChatGPT. A dot runs on its own cloud computer and browser, uses the apps you connect and keeps working on projects between conversations. OpenAI’s launch material shows presentation work as one use case, such as updating a board deck after feedback. Dots are rolling out to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, and workspace admins must turn them on for business accounts.
  • Gemini app and NotebookLM. You can also draft a deck in the Gemini app’s Canvas and export it to Google Slides, and NotebookLM added a Slide Deck feature in November 2025.
  • Claude. Claude can also work with PowerPoint. See Claude for PowerPoint.
  • Dedicated AI presentation tools. Tools such as Gamma, Beautiful.ai, Decktopus and Presentations.ai generate decks from a prompt or outline, and SlidesAI works inside Google Slides and PowerPoint. SlideUpLift’s own AI Presentation Maker is another option if you want to combine AI drafting with professionally designed templates.

A teacherGoogle SlidesEasy to share lessons and collaborate with students.
On a remote teamGoogle SlidesLive co-editing from any device.
A startup founder pitching investorsEitherGoogle Slides is quick and free. PowerPoint offers more animation polish and works offline.
A corporate professional in a Microsoft shopPowerPointFits Excel, Teams and the Microsoft 365 workflow, and is often the expected file format.
A designer or marketerPowerPoint, or a design-focused toolMore control over layouts, animation and brand assets.

Use both: a hybrid workflow

Some teams build the master template in PowerPoint, collaborate on content in Google Slides, then finalize in PowerPoint for presenting. If you do this, review fonts, animations and embedded media after each conversion. For more on working in both, read build great presentations in PowerPoint and Google Slides.

Example scenarios

The scenarios below are illustrative examples, not customer case studies.

  • Remote marketing team: edits a campaign deck together during a video call and pulls data from Google Sheets, with no installs. Google Slides fits.
  • University course group project: five students work on one deck and the instructor leaves comments. Google Slides fits, and it costs nothing.
  • Startup investor pitch: needs polished transitions and a deck that runs with no internet in the room. PowerPoint fits.
  • Corporate training team: presents with Presenter View and links live Excel data so quarterly numbers update. PowerPoint fits.

Google Slides vs PowerPoint: The Verdict

  • Pick Google Slides: if collaboration, simplicity and cost matter most, or your team already lives in Google Workspace.
  • Pick PowerPoint: if you need advanced animation and design control, offline reliability or Microsoft 365 integration.
  • Use both: if you want PowerPoint polish with Google Slides teamwork, and are willing to check the file after each conversion.

A quick test: ask yourself, “Am I prioritizing collaboration or polish?” If the answer is collaboration, start in Google Slides. If it is polish, start in PowerPoint. On AI, both apps can now draft a deck from a prompt, so choose based on which ecosystem and plan you already pay for.

FAQs

  1. Is Google Slides better than PowerPoint?

It depends on how you work. Google Slides is better for free, real-time collaboration in a browser. PowerPoint is better for advanced animation, deep design control and offline use. Both now include AI assistants that can draft slides.

  2. Is Google Slides the same as PowerPoint?

No. Google Slides is made by Google, runs in a browser and is part of Google Workspace. PowerPoint is made by Microsoft and is part of Microsoft 365, with desktop, web and mobile apps. They can open each other’s .pptx files, though complex formatting may change.

  3. Does Google Slides have AI like Copilot?

Yes. Gemini in Google Slides can generate images and slides, and in mid-2026 Google added the ability to build a full multi-slide deck from one prompt, grounded in your Google Drive files. Access depends on your plan: Google AI Pro or Ultra, or a Google Workspace plan.

  4. Which is better for presentations: Gemini or Copilot?

Both can draft a deck from a prompt. Gemini works well with files in Google Drive. Copilot offers Brand Kit, reusable Skills and web grounding inside PowerPoint. Pick the one that matches the ecosystem and plan you already use, and review the output for accuracy.

  5. Can I use Google Slides without an internet connection?

Yes, after you turn on offline access in Google Drive settings. You can view and edit decks offline, but real-time collaboration, embedded videos and live data from Google Sheets will not work until you reconnect.

  6. Is Google Slides safe for sensitive information?

Google Slides stores decks in Google’s cloud, and your account can use two-step verification. Safety mostly depends on how you share. Use view-only access or named collaborators, avoid public links, and protect your Google account with a strong password and two-step verification. Follow your organization’s policy for confidential material.

  7. Can I export a Google Slides presentation to other formats?

Yes. You can download a deck as Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx), PDF (.pdf), plain text (.txt), JPEG, PNG or SVG (vector). Review the converted file for font and animation changes.

  8. Which is cheaper, Google Slides or PowerPoint?

Google Slides is free for personal use with a Google account. PowerPoint needs a Microsoft 365 subscription or a one-time purchase, with Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 per month. Business plans for both are priced per user.

  9. Is PowerPoint free to use?

Microsoft offers PowerPoint for the web, which can be used with a Microsoft account but has fewer features than the desktop app. The full desktop app needs a Microsoft 365 subscription or a one-time purchase.

  10. Which is better for students?

Google Slides is usually the practical choice: it is free, works in a browser and makes group projects easy. PowerPoint may be better if your school provides Microsoft 365 or you need advanced animation and offline use.

  11. Which is better for teachers?

Google Slides is generally easier for sharing lessons and collaborating with students. PowerPoint suits teachers who want advanced animation and full offline use.

  12. Can Google Slides or PowerPoint handle large files?

PowerPoint generally handles large decks with heavy media better. Google Slides can manage reasonably large decks stored in Google Drive, but very media-heavy files may load slowly.
