How to generate a word cloud in 3 steps
No design skills, no downloads. The whole word cloud creator runs in your browser.
Paste your text
Drop in survey responses, meeting notes, a speech transcript, your brand values, or a plain list of keywords. The word cloud generator counts how often each word appears, so the terms that matter most show up largest.
Make it yours
Pick a color palette that matches your brand, choose fonts, adjust the layout, and strip out filler words like “the” and “and” so your cloud actually says something. Every change previews instantly.
Download or keep editing
Export as a PowerPoint slide, a high-res PNG, or a scalable SVG. Drop it straight into your deck, or open Creatos AI and add it to a slide there while you build the rest of the presentation.
A word cloud generator built for slides, not just screenshots
Most online word cloud generators hand you a flat PNG. That's fine for a blog post, but in a slide deck it's a dead end. You can't recolor it, swap in your brand font, or fix a single word without regenerating the whole thing.
SlideUpLift's wordcloud generator works differently. Every cloud you generate downloads as a native, editable PowerPoint or Google Slides file. Each word is a real text object, so you can resize, recolor, move, or delete it right inside the deck you're already building.
Or skip the download step entirely. Open Creatos AI, SlideUpLift's AI presentation editor, add your word cloud to a slide, and let it generate the rest of the deck around it, all in the browser.
PowerPoint native
Download a real .PPTX file. Opens in PowerPoint, Keynote, or any editor.
Google Slides native
Send it straight to Google Slides and keep editing in the browser.
Straight into Creatos AI
Add your exported word cloud to a slide in the Creatos AI editor and build the rest of the deck around it.

Where a word cloud earns its place in a presentation
Team meetings & workshops
Run a “describe this quarter in one word” icebreaker, paste the responses, and open with a slide the room helped create.
Customer & employee feedback
Paste open-ended survey answers, reviews, or exit-interview notes. Generating a word cloud from raw feedback surfaces recurring themes faster than reading every response.
Education & training
Turn vocabulary lists, reading passages, or class polls into a visual students remember. Teachers use a free word cloud generator to summarize a chapter or kick off a discussion.
Marketing & research
Visualize brand perception, social listening data, or keyword research. Make “what our audience says about us” a single, shareable slide.
Reports & recaps
Year-in-review decks, retrospectives, all-hands updates. A word cloud is a striking section divider or closing slide that summarizes a lot without a wall of text.

What is a word cloud?
A word cloud (also called a tag cloud or word collage) is a visual summary of text where each word's size reflects how often it appears. The more frequently a word shows up, the larger and bolder it's displayed. It's one of the fastest ways to show an audience “here's what people are actually saying” without a table or a paragraph.
Word clouds work best for qualitative data such as survey comments, interview notes, reviews, and brainstorm output, where you want to reveal themes rather than exact numbers. For precise comparisons, a bar chart is the better choice. For a memorable, at-a-glance summary on a slide, generate a word cloud.
5 tips for a better word cloud
- Clean your input. Remove names, URLs, and boilerplate before pasting so they don't dominate the cloud.
- Cut the filler. Use stop-word removal to drop “the,” “and,” “is,” and any context-specific words that add no meaning.
- Cap the word count. 40 to 80 words is the sweet spot. Beyond that, small words become unreadable on a slide.
- Stick to one palette. Two or three brand colors read as intentional; a rainbow reads as a default.
- Use it as a talking point. Pair the cloud with one line of insight: “Customers mentioned speed 3× more than price.”
How to make a word cloud in PowerPoint and Google Slides
Neither PowerPoint nor Google Slides has a built-in word cloud feature. The usual workaround is to generate an image on a word cloud site and paste it in, which leaves you with a picture you can't edit. Here's the faster way.
Generate your word cloud
Open the generator, paste your text, pick colors and a font, and click Generate.
Download for PowerPoint or open in Google Slides
The file opens as a 16:9 slide with every word as a separate, editable text object.
Edit words like any text
Click a word to recolor it, change the font, resize, or delete it. Drag words to rearrange the layout.
Match it to your deck
Copy the slide into your presentation and add a title, or open Creatos AI, add the word cloud to a slide, and build the rest of the deck around it.
Two other options if you'd rather stay inside PowerPoint: build the cloud by hand with text boxes (fine for 10 to 15 words, painful beyond that), or use the Pro Word Cloud add-in, which generates a flat image inside PowerPoint that you can't edit word by word. For anything you'll present more than once, an editable file is worth the extra minute.

Word cloud generator, answered
Is the SlideUpLift word cloud generator free?
Yes. Your first two word clouds are free with a free account and no credit card. After that, any SlideUpLift membership gives you unlimited word cloud generation along with 50,000+ premium templates and all our other presentation tools.
Do I need to create an account to generate a wordcloud?
Yes, a free SlideUpLift account, so we can save your word clouds and keep track of your two free generations. Signing up takes about 30 seconds and doesn't require a card.
What formats can I download my word cloud in?
Every word cloud exports as an editable PowerPoint (.PPTX) file or directly to Google Slides. Because each word is a real text object, you can keep editing after download.
Can I edit the word cloud after generating it?
Yes. Before you download, change any setting and click Regenerate as often as you like. Once you've exported, add the word cloud to a slide in PowerPoint, Google Slides, or the Creatos AI editor, where you can resize and reposition it and build the rest of your presentation around it.
Does PowerPoint have a built-in word cloud generator?
No. PowerPoint and Google Slides don't generate word clouds natively. The Pro Word Cloud add-in for PowerPoint produces a flat image inside the app, and most people paste a PNG from a word cloud website. SlideUpLift generates the cloud as editable slide text instead, so it behaves like anything else on your slide.
Can I make a word cloud in a specific shape?
Yes. Choose Rectangle, Circle, or Diamond in the generator's Shape setting. And because every word exports as an editable text object, you can rearrange words inside or around any other shape directly in PowerPoint or Google Slides, which a flattened image from a shape word cloud maker can't do.
Can I use phrases instead of single words?
The generator counts individual words. To keep a phrase together as one term, join it with hyphens before pasting (for example, customer-success or cross-team), and it will be sized and placed as a single unit.
Can I generate a word cloud from a PDF, spreadsheet, or survey export?
Copy the text from your document, spreadsheet column, or survey tool and paste it into the generator. Plain text works best.
Can I collect live audience responses?
No, this isn't a live polling tool. If you're running a live word cloud in Mentimeter, Slido, or Poll Everywhere, export the responses afterward and paste them here to turn the results into a permanent, editable slide for your recap deck.
How many words should a word cloud have?
For a slide, 40 to 80 words is ideal. The generator sizes words by frequency, so the most important terms stay readable even when you include more.
Is my text stored anywhere?
Your text is used only to generate the word cloud. It isn't shared, sold, or used to train anything.
What's the difference between a word cloud and a tag cloud?
They're the same idea. “Tag cloud” comes from early blogs and websites that displayed popular tags at different sizes. “Word cloud” is the general term for any text where size reflects frequency. Either way, this free wordcloud generator handles both.
What's the best free word cloud generator for presentations?
If you only need a flat image for a blog post or a poster, most free word cloud makers will do. If the cloud is going into a presentation, SlideUpLift is the free option that exports editable PowerPoint and Google Slides files, so you can match fonts, colors, and layout to the rest of your deck without regenerating anything.
Can I use my word cloud commercially?
Yes. Word clouds you generate are yours to use in client presentations, marketing materials, reports, and anywhere else.
